VIA bringt den $49 Android PC – Hands-On Video

Zwar bekommt man für $49 – noch – keinen vollständigen PC, aber VIA legt mit dem Android PC (APC) schon mal ein komplett bestücktes Mainboard zu diesem Preis auf den Tisch. Die ganze Technik findet Platz auf einem Neo-ITX Board mit gerade mal 17×8,5cm Größe und passt in jedes Standard Mini-ITX oder microATX Gehäuse.

Als Prozessor kommt ein VIA WonderMedia ARM 11 SoC zum Einsatz, der auf 512MB RAM und 2GB Flash-Speicher zugreifen kann, durch Hardware-Beschleunigung für die Videowiedergabe ist auch HDTV möglich. Die Ausgabe des Bildes erfolgt per VGA oder HDMI, der Netzwerkanschluss per Ethernet mit maximal 100MBit/s. Laut Hersteller liegt die maximale Leistungsaufnahme des Geräts bei 4 Watt im Ruhezustand und bei 13,5 Watt maximal.

Das Betriebssystem ist ebenfalls schon mit dabei, es handelt sich dabei um eine angepasste Android 2.3 Version, die für den Betrieb mit Maus und Tastatur optimiert wurde. Ein Browser ist natürlich schon dabei, ebenfalls sind weitere Apps vorinstalliert. Auf welchem Weg weitere Apps installiert werden können ist noch nicht bekannt. Dafür ist sicher auch die Frage entscheidend, ob und in welchem Umfang bestehende Android-Apps für das System angepasst werden müssten.

Den APC wird es nicht nur für OEMs geben, das Mainboard wird ab Juli auch einzeln für jeden im Handel zu haben sein, um sich damit seinen ganz persönlichen APC zu bauen. Beim Preis von 49$ sicher nicht nur für Bastler eine interessante Basis für einen individuellen Android PC.

APC consumes only 4 watts when operating at idle power and 13.5 watts at maximum load. This is ten times less than a standard PC system and ensures significant power savings in large scale deployments.
